History of the Ford Mustang

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

The Ford Mustang is a highly popular muscle and sports car as a daily driver, weekend warrior, and show-winning work of mechanical art. Whether you just need basic transportation to get from point A to point B, an 8 second ¼ mile beast, or even a show-stopping work of power and beauty, there is a Ford Mustang out there suitable to your needs. Coming from a Ford engineer’s college mascot, the Ford Mustang gets its name from the SMU Mustangs. With varying engines, styles, colors, options, and modifications, one can completely personalize his Mustang into his domestic powerhouse dream machine.Debuting in 1964, the Mustang immediately gained popularity among the young and hip crowd as the next muscle car. With more powerful engines coming out through 1973, the Mustang was symbolic to the muscle car/pony car era. The gas crisis of the 1970s forced Ford to downsize the Mustang power plants in 1974, and the Mustang II was born. In 1979, the first Fox Body Mustang debuted with the “4-eyed fox” front end. The Fox Body Mustang chassis was virtually unchanged until 2005, but its design was updated in 1994 with the first SN-95 Mustang. The SN-95s are between 1994-1998 and have a more luxurious interior with updated aesthetics. In 1999, the 35th anniversary mustang debuted with another upgraded exterior with sharp lines and aggressive front end lasting until 2004. In 2005, Ford debuted the all-new Mustang. With a new chassis, body, interior and engine, the new mustang is an aggressive powerhouse for the streets, tracks and shows, and is a great combination of style and power for the sticker price. With recent speculation about the Carroll Shelby/SVT Cobra debuting in 2007, the Ford Mustang Crowd has been on edge waiting to see what kind of monster Ford can produce, and at what price!
